We have made the design for our brim cutting tool quite intuitive so that it is easy to use and suitable for both right handed and left handed hat makers. The short version of this instruction manual is:
- larger knob screw – use it to adjust the width of the brim for cutting;
- smaller knob screw – use it to change the direction of the blade (for right or left handed use) and replace the blade.
But if you are ready to find out all the details about our amazing tool you can continue reading.
How to insert the blade cartridge
Insert the cartridge with the blade
If you are right handed insert the cartridge as in the picture with the tip of the blade closer to the inch marks. If you are left handed – switch the position of the blade to the side of the centimetre marks.
Press down so that it is even (see red line). Press your finger between the tool and the base plate so that there is space to accommodate the blade.
Put in the knob screw and close it. Do not screw it too tight.
How to adjust the width of the brim
Open the larger know screw (anticlockwise).
Lift the tool a bit up so that there is more space between the tool and the base plate and the blade does not scratch the base.
Close the knob screw (clockwise).
How to cut the brim
Once you have set the right width for the brim, lift up the tool from the base plate and slide it on the felt. It is important to do it carefully not to scratch or cut the felt.
Make sure that the curve of the tool is aligned flush to the hat crown. When you have positioned the brim cutter in the right place push the cartridge with the blade down so that it presses/ cuts into the felt.
Now start pushing the tool forward as you press it against the hat crown. The blade cuts through the felt like a hot knife through butter. If you notice that this process is no longer smooth it is time to change the blade.
How to change the blade
Screw open the blade cartridge and remove the lid.
Exchange the old blade with the new, sharp one. Make sure that the sharp edge of the blade is facing downward (outward). Press the blade into place.
Be careful, the blades are very sharp!
Put the lid back on, screw it closed and place the cartridge back into the brim cutter.
How to prepare new blades
We will include replacement blades but once you have used them up, you can easily prepare new ones yourself.
You can purchase Stanley blades, but also other brands can be used as long as they fit into the cartridge. You can always contact us for help.
Use two flat nose pliers to break the blades into smaller pieces. Use the break lines to guide you.
Be careful as some blades may splinter!
Some blades may have protective grease on them, wipe them clean before inserting them into the cartridge.
We hope that this instruction manual has provided you with all the necessary details needed to work with your new brim cutter tool. Should you have any questions, contact us and we will be happy to help!
